Eating a wide variety of food is the first principle of a healthy diet. A more varied diet can reduce the risk of many cancers and cardiovascular diseases. One can purchase each and every variety of vegetables and fruits present in the market. Every fruit and every type of vegetable has a special quality.

It may seem strange to accept that variety can make such a significant difference, surely it would be better to find out which is the best kind of oil and use only that one, and to find out which fruit has the most vitamins and stick to eating that? But people who choose the BEST FOOD still end up missing out on the full benefit of healthy eating. For example, one fruit may have the most vitamins, but another is higher in antioxidants and third can have more fibre than either of the other two. All fruits offer their own unique combination of nutritional assets. The same applies to the rest of your diet.

Nutrition society of Australia encourages an intake of 20 to 30 different foods on most days. However, variety doesn’t just mean eating a different kind of doughnut or biscuits every day at morning tea. Because it is unprocessed foods that have the greatest nutritional benefits, and you will maximize them with increased dietary variety.

Get into ‘Nude’ food

Processing of food often leads to loss of many of the beneficial components of food. Sometimes processing also means dressing up healthy food with ingredients that are not beneficial to health, and may even harmful. Food that has not been processed in this way – ‘Nude’ food- is generally a better choice for good health. For eg. Salt is something that most of us consume in amounts which lead to ageing, high blood pressure and increased risk of cardiovascular problems.

However, there is nothing wrong with enjoying small amount of processed foods occasionally, but, ideally most of your dietary intake should come from foods that undergo minimal processing, such as fresh fruits and vegetable; legumes, nuts, and seeds; whole grain cereal foods; fresh lean meat, poultry, fish and eggs.

These are foods that contain the nutritional benefits for healing, treating, and preventing a wide range of health problems.
